History of our practice: | Dr. Ralph Swetlow, a 1950 graduate of the Chicago College of Optometry opened the practice in Arlington in 1951 near the intersection of Walter Reed Drive and Columbia Pike. He was among the first optometrists in Virginia to fit contact lenses. He presented a paper on contact lens fitting at Trinity College in Ireland. His wife, Rosalin, an accountant, assisted him with practice management and with developing a boutique for eyewear. They have both retired and live in Northern Virginia. Their daughter, Robin Rinearson, was welcomed to the practice in 1977 after graduating from Illinois College of Optometry. Her interests are in primary care, pediatric practice and working with multiply handicapped individuals. She was instrumental in obtaining and using sophisticated diagnostic equipment for detecting diseases of the eye. Together with her father, this practice integrated the use of a retinal camera and automated visual fields for detecting and monitoring the onset and progression of disorders of the eye in 1980. Dr. Rinearson frequently coordinates with Nikia Dower for occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech and language therapy. Dr. Christopher Renner was welcomed to the practice after graduating from the University of Alabama School of Optometry in 1986. His interests are in primary, pediatric and geriatric care. He was instrumental in developing strong relationships with local nursing homes and assisted care facilities to deliver eye care directly to the patients living there. With the expansion of staff and the increase in patient load, the office moved to its present location in 1989. Dr. Renner and Dr. Rinearson expanded the use of diagnostic equipment in the practice to include a corneal topographer. They continued to develop the practice's ability to diagnose and treat adults and children with special visual needs and developmental delays. Dr. Robert Warren is a third generation optometrist who graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee. His grandfather, Dr. George Warren, started his practice in Washington D.C. in 1920. His son, Dr. Evart Warren, joined him in practice in 1938, then moved the practice to McLean, Virginia in 1970. Dr. Robert Warren joined his father's practice in 1976. They had a thriving contact lens practice where speciality lenses were crafted individually on the premises from raw materials (PMMA and oxygen permeable plastics) using lathes and refined cutting and polishing tools. Dr. Evart Warren retired and Dr. Robert Warren joined our practice in 1994. The three partners have been active in the Virginia Optometric Association and have participated in expanding the scope of practice for optometrists state-wide to include diagnosis and treatment of ocular disease. They participate in pre- and post-surgical care of patients who need or want cataract surgery, LASIK surgery, strabismus surgery, ocular plastic surgery and retinal surgery. They are skilled in the monitoring and treatment of glaucoma with visual fields, GDX nerve fiber analyzer, retinal photography and with medications. They have established excellent referral sources for surgical and complex medical treatment of eye disease. | |
