As a trusted provider of ortho-K lenses, as well as regular eyeglasses, we’ve gathered a list of frequently asked questions about this non-invasive treatment method to help keep you informed. Here’s what you need to know about ortho-K:
Are There Age Restrictions for Ortho-K?
The short answer is no. In fact, children as young as six have been safely and successfully treated with ortho-k lenses. Since ortho-K has been shown to reduce or halt the progression of short-sightedness (myopia), it’s become one of the most common methods of vision correction in children, pre-teens and teenagers in our practice.
Why Are Adolescents Good Candidates?
Any child or adolescent is a good candidate for ortho-k if they have a tendency to lose or abuse their contact lenses/glasses, or if wearing them interferes with their active life. Several studies show that ortho-k can slow the progression of your child’s nearsightedness. Have your child undergo a full eye exam at Nova Vision Center and we can get started with the treatment.
How New Is Ortho-K Correction?
The idea of corneal molding to correct myopia may have originated over a millennia ago when the Chinese used bags of sand resting on their closed eyelids to improve their vision. Ortho-k has been around since the 1940s, but in the past 15 years, it has become more safe and predictable, thanks to technological advancements and the development oxygen permeable contact lens materials.
How Can My Child Get Started?
Prior to starting ortho-K, you need to have your child fully examined by our optometrist even if they’ve had a recent eye examination by a different one. We’ll need to assess several aspects of their eyes including health, vision and corneal shape so we can establish if they’re a good candidate for the treatment. If they’ve had a full eye exam with us in the last 12 months, a corneal topography may only be needed as well as a quick discussion with your optometrist to see if ortho-k is right for you.
