Most of us know how important sleep is to our health. But did you know that it’s also important to your visual health and keeps you seeing clearly for years on end? Other than affecting your health and your appearance, missing out on sleep can damage your eyes. In this post, your trusted optometrist, Nova Vision Center, shares how the lack of sleep can harm your eyesight.
- Dark Circles. Some effects of sleep deprivation may actually harm your eyes, but some of them also affect your external appearance. When you lack sleep, your eyes could look puffy, as if they’re forming dark circles underneath your eyes.
- Eye Spasms. Your eye doctor would also tell you that lack of sleep can cause fatigue, leading to eye spasms and erratic twitching throughout the day. This can become frustrating, making daily activities such as reading, driving, and working, very difficult.
- Dry, Bloodshot Eyes. One of the more serious side effects of sleep deprivation is having dry, itchy, or bloodshot eyes. This can result in discomfort and irritation since your eyes lack lubrication to stay healthy. This can also result in light sensitivity, or in serious cases, blurred vision.
- Risk of Eye Infections. Since your eyes are dry and itchy, you’re more likely to rub them, putting your eyes at risk of infections. This can also weaken your body’s immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to infections if you don’t get enough rest. This leads to serious problems down the line, such as glaucoma, eventually leading to vision loss. Make sure that you get enough sleep each night so that your eyes can rest and heal so that they can remain healthy.
