Children’s eye exams are an essential part of their health checkups. That’s why you should set aside time to bring your infants or teenagers to your trusted eye doctor. Of course, make sure to prepare your child before heading to the eye clinic, especially if they are old enough to understand what’s going on.

To give you an idea and to help you explain to your children what will happen during your doctor visit, Nova Vision Center discusses a few things that you can expect during kids’ eye exams.
Infants
For babies younger than one year old, eye specialists focus on giving objective tests that will examine the following:
- The infant’s acuity and fixation – Doctors typically use a target that babies could follow to see if they can maintain their vision.
- Eye alignment – Doctors check if the eyes are properly aligned through a cover test.
- Eye pressure – This is checked by the tactile feel of the eyes.
- Eye coordination
Your optometrist will also look for any signs of eye diseases and refractive errors. They will also assess the front and back tissue of the eyes.
Late Toddlers and Pre-Teens
For school-aged children, subjective measurements are done along with the tests used for infants. Eye specialists will also look for any signs of eye health problems, color vision (color blindness) and vision deficiency (nearsightedness or farsightedness).
Teenagers
As children become older, their eye exams will start focusing on their greater visual demands in order to properly function in the classroom as well as during their extracurricular activities. A subjective vision test is done in order to identify any kind of vision problem that will require correction with a glasses prescription.
